Board Game Narrator – Privacy Policy
- Effective date: November 3, 2026
- App: Board Game Narrator (package
com.singularomnia.boardgamenarrator) - Developer: Singular Omnia ("we", "us")
- Contact: contact@singularomnia.com
1. The short version
- We do not run any server that receives your data. The app has no account system, no ads, no analytics and no crash-reporting service.
- What you capture, load and narrate is kept on your device.
- If you choose AI narration, the text being narrated is sent straight from your device to Google's Gemini service, using your own Gemini API key. We never see it. Google handles it under its own terms.
- If you choose Device voice, nothing is sent anywhere to narrate.
- You can send us feedback by email, but only if you choose to, and you see the email before it goes.
2. What we collect
Nothing. We do not collect, receive, store or sell personal data through the app. The only information that can ever reach us is what you write in an email to us yourself (see section 9).
3. What is stored on your device
The app keeps the following in its own private storage on your device, so that it can work:
- Your settings and your game profiles (look, voices, pronunciations, notes you typed about a game).
- The Google Gemini API key you enter, if you use AI narration.
- Pictures you send from your phone for narration, PDF rulebooks you load, the text recognised in them, and names you give them (the Library).
- A saved image of the PDF page last shown, so the app opens faster (kept on the device only, never backed up).
- The text of the most recent passage you had narrated (so you can replay it or report a problem).
- A technical log of what the app did recently (for example which page was opened and which text was narrated), so that a problem can be reported. It stays in the app's private storage (about 4 MB at most; the oldest lines are removed), it is not written to Android's shared system log, it is not part of Android backup, and it leaves your device only if you attach it to an email yourself (section 9).
- Recordings of narrations (the Recordings library, Pro) and the music you downloaded or imported.
You can delete items inside the app (Library, Recordings, Music library, profiles), or remove everything by uninstalling the app or clearing its storage in Android settings. Files are read from your device only when you pick them yourself (PDFs, songs, profile files). If you export a game profile to a file, you choose where it is saved and whether your API key is included in it.
Android backup. If Android backup is turned on for your Google account, Android backs up the app's settings and the settings of your game profiles to your Google account, so they can come back on a new device. It does not include your API key, the text you had narrated, your pictures, PDFs, recordings or music. That backup belongs to your Google account and is handled by Google under Google's terms; we have no access to it.
4. Data sent to Google Gemini (AI narration only)
AI narration uses Google's Gemini API. The app talks to Google directly from your device with the API key you provided (we are not in the middle). This happens only when you have selected AI narration and have entered a key. Before the first request, the app shows a one-time notice explaining this; until you accept it, nothing is sent and the device voice reads instead.
| What is sent | When |
|---|---|
| The text to narrate: text read on your device from a picture, from a screen region (screen reader) or from a PDF selection | Each time something is narrated in AI mode |
| The game description ("game context") you wrote in the app, the characters met so far with the voices cast for them, and, for continuity, a few of the passages narrated just before | With the same requests |
| The lines of the finished script, with acting directions, to be spoken by Google's AI voices (Google sends audio back) | While narrating |
| The lines again, to translate them or to choose music and sound effects that fit the scene | When translation or "music follows the story / sound effects" is on |
| Quick game setup (Settings > PDFs): the text of the PDFs you select, page by page; a PDF with no readable text is sent as the file itself (up to 15 MB) | Only when you start Quick game setup |
| Your API key, to ask Google whether it works, to download the list of available AI voices, and with every request above | When you test or save a key, and when narrating |
Pictures are not sent. Photos and screen pictures are turned into text on your device first (Google ML Kit, offline). Only that text goes to Google.
Google processes this content under its own terms, which depend on the plan of your key. For free keys, Google's terms may allow it to use submitted content to improve its products. Please read:
- Gemini API Additional Terms of Service: https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/terms
- Google Privacy Policy: https://policies.google.com/privacy
Please do not narrate personal or sensitive information in AI mode.
Costs. The key is yours and so is the relationship with Google. Free keys have limits; heavy use on a key with billing turned on may be charged by Google. The app shows only an estimate of usage, never a real balance.
AI can make mistakes. A line may get the wrong voice, and wording or translations can contain errors. You can report a problem from the app's menu.
5. Device voice
In Device voice mode the text is spoken by the text-to-speech engine installed on your device (Android's, or one you installed and selected, such as an engine from your device maker). The app does not send the text anywhere. Some engines can process text online; that is governed by the engine's own privacy policy, which you can check in your Android settings. When a free Gemini key's daily limit is used up, the app switches to the device voice by itself.
6. Other network connections
- Music downloads. The built-in music library is downloaded from Google Firebase Storage (public files) the first time a mood plays or when you download it. Like any download, it shows your device's IP address to Google's servers and which track was requested. The app sends no other information and no account.
- Text recognition. Pictures are read on your device with Google ML Kit's bundled (offline) text recogniser. ML Kit sends Google technical information for diagnostics and usage statistics: device and app details, performance figures, error codes and a random identifier for this installation (not your name or account). It does not send your pictures or the text read from them. See Google's ML Kit data disclosure.
- Phone photo capture (local network). While you use a game profile with phone capture, the app runs a small web server on your local Wi-Fi network. Your phone opens its address in a browser and sends photos to the tablet. The photos travel only inside your local network and the connection is plain HTTP (not encrypted). The address shown in the app contains a random code that changes each time the server starts; requests without it are refused, and so are files over 25 MB. Anyone who sees the address (or the QR code) could still send a picture to the app, so use it on a network you trust, such as your home. The server runs only while the app is running and stops when you close the app.
- Screen reader (Pro, companion-app profiles). When you start it, Android asks for your permission to capture the screen and shows that capture is active. It reads only the area you set up, and only when you tap its floating button; between taps nothing is captured. The captured area is turned into text on your device. In AI mode that text is sent to Gemini as described in section 4. Screen pictures and their text are not saved. You can stop it at any time from the button or the notification. Be aware that the area you point it at may show information from the other app.
- Google Play. The Pro upgrade is a one-time purchase made through Google Play. Payment is handled entirely by Google; we receive no payment details. The app only asks Google Play whether your account owns Pro.
7. Permissions
- Internet, network state: to reach the services above and to know whether you are online (without a connection the device voice reads instead).
- Notifications, foreground service (data sync): to keep the phone-capture server running with a visible notification while you play.
- Display over other apps, screen capture (media projection foreground service): only for the Pro screen reader: its floating button over your game's app, and reading the part of the screen you ask it to. Both are requested only when you start the screen reader.
The app does not request access to your location, contacts, microphone or camera.
8. Children
The app is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone, including children. Because we collect no data, there is none to delete; a parent can remove everything the app stores by uninstalling it.
9. Emails you send us
If you use Send feedback or Report a problem with this narration, your own email app opens with a message addressed to us. It already contains the app version, Android version, device model, the app and narration languages, the narration mode and whether Pro is on. A problem report also contains the narrated text (up to 4,000 characters) and the text it came from. Nothing is sent until you send the email yourself. Only if you choose "Attach log", the app's recent technical log is attached; it can include text from your games and narrations, and never your API key. We use what you send only to answer you and to improve the app, and we delete it when you ask.
10. Your rights
Under laws such as the EU's GDPR, Brazil's LGPD and California's CCPA you may have rights to access, correct and delete personal data. The app keeps your data only on your device, so you can exercise most of them directly in the app or in Android settings. The only personal data we may hold is an email you sent us; write to contact@singularomnia.com and we will delete it. For data processed by Google, please contact Google under its policies.
11. Security
Connections to Google use encrypted HTTPS. Your data on the device is protected by Android's app sandbox. The exception is the local capture server (section 6), which uses plain HTTP inside your own network. Keep your API key private and delete it in Google AI Studio if you think it was exposed.
12. Changes
If this policy changes we will update it here and change the effective date. Significant changes will also be mentioned in the app's release notes.
